An update from Texas ruff neck, while drinking beers at a campfire:

Interesting conversation with a ruff neck driller (retired from Shell) but still working.

EMISSIONS HAVE BEEN IMPOSED ON DRILLING FOR SHALE OIL.

Only so much natural gas can be flared off while extracting the oil.

There is more oil to extract at a faster rate but the flaring equipment can only handle so much oil production (the result of excess gas).

If more oil was pulled from the well it would have to be purged and not flared - a bit appealing but EPA monitors and will create problems.

Bottom line is shale is much more lucrative as far as barrels per day production but a longer /slower extraction is persued to avoid gas flaring to the environment.

THE OTHER ALTERNATIVE IS TO BUILD INFRASTRUCURE THAT RECOVERS THE GAS.

This is a big effort and part of why natural gas keeps coming out, with such big volumes.

The other dirty little secret that people do NOT talk about is coring and the OTHER layers of shale below the shale being tapped now. There is a large long term source of energy in multiples below what is being talked about.

Lastly the drill bits with hydraulics behind them push and steer the bit to an amazing degree of accuracy.

They leiterally go where they are wanted to be - great technology.

A little feed back from Houston area - from a sure enough ruff neck

Bob
