Nokia estimated $650M in annual recurring royalties from all sources in their most recent conference call. I imagine that the bulk of this is iPhone related and therefore growing quickly. Also potentially fueling the royalty stream growth is additional lawsuits.

I know it's not like Apple, but an acquisition of NOK would make sense in some areas. A few:

Nokia's patents combined with Apples would be incredible.
Nokia has some great engineering and design talent.
Great cell phone industry relationships.
Apple could sell/spin off the non-consumer divisions.
Pre-existing mapping program.
Last but certainly not least superior expertise in cell phone camera tech, and Zeiss relationship.

Pipe dream (pass the pipe!) I would never expect Apple to do it. But you can make a decently compelling argument.
