(California)
"schools can barely keep the lights on, let alone pay for science curriculum."

Quick comparison:
=======================

California Average Teacher salary $59,825 (Highest in the Nation)

Significantly below the national averages in all areas of Academic Achievement one of the Lowest in the Nation.

Constantly bitching (Highest in the Nation).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
South Dakota Average Teacher Salary $34,709 (Lowest in the Nation)

Beating the national averages for Academic Achievement

How often do we see news of the South Dakotan Teachers complaining?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Montana Average Teacher Salary $39, 832

Beating the national averages for Academic Achievement

When was the last time you heard them complaining?

Editorial comment:

*Pay for a damn good Science, Technology, and Math curriculum
*Hire teachers who are in it because they value their contribution to student achievement, and who appreciate the great benefits (California requires 175 days of school, that leaves teachers with 190 days off + sick leave and paid time off for personal stuff). They are still provided with medical benefits and a retirement plan, which is considered an archaic practice in private business these days.
* Stop paying people who shelve books the same salary mid managers make in Corporate America. Now if you want to create free market incentives and pay teachers more who are increasing student achievement statistics, I'm all for that. Perhaps the people who are in the positions to hire would consider that factor also if their salaries and bonuses were linked into increases in student achievement statistics.
