I remember the days, in the 80's, when an ER visit was about $300 total, and a day in the hospital cost a similar amount - and people were complaining that it was expensive. But somehow, along the way, we have become desensitized.
Not only are prices higher, they're harder to understand. My son was recently taken to the emergency room and spent 3 or 4 hours there. Total charges came to about $2500. But the insurance company paid the contract rate for the care, which was about $2900. So the hospital received $400 more the total charges, and then billed me an additional $800. The explanation was that it represented the deductible and co-pay. I must not be too bright because I couldn't understand their explanation as to why I owed the hospital that money instead of the insurance company.
