I'm certainly VERY surprised to learn TC is one of my favorite authors! And while anyone trying to connect the differing levels of order into one theory deserves not only an A for effort, but respect for realizing the truth of the matter, it doesn't mean his analogies have to be agreed with. In fact, by definition, one is better off describing the higher levels of order in terms of the lower from which they emerged and not the other way around as the higher level term was created precisely because it was needed to describe the emergent property or construct. That term (here profit) was not needed at the lower level as the property wasn't present.

No wonder no one studies ole Tom in science any more... except perhaps in history of science :))

Of course it doesn't mean you CANT use higher order terms on the lower level... It just becomes tortured and verbose... but some people like that. Interestingly if I remember correctly TC specifically wanted to avoid the fancy higher level terms created by scientists in favor of the broader lower level terms... probably didn't realize his vocabulary itself was an an abstraction or he most certainly was unaware at that time that symbiosis was the biological norm.

For further discourse on this actual on topic topic you'll have to go to the other EVOLUTION board as this board is usually reserved for different types of discussion. :))
