MFE has never emphasized CGI special effects. As you say, it's very competitive and there's not much money in it. Let ILM, Digital Domain and PDI spend all their time and computer resources on effects, that keeps them out from doing long-form CGI animation --a different beast altogether.

MFE has stated they want to use computers as a production tool that brings high quality, efficiency (editing etc..) and uniqueness to children's animation. They want to change the economics and capitalize on the huge growth in children's entertainment over the next 20 years. They also don't want to be a "job shop", just doing production work. They want to own some form of residual, distribution rights, profit splits, licensing income, etc... This is very different from trying to do special effects works for studios. That's just not their business.
