Hi Steve...>>I wonder if they're telling us a deal was squashed?<<

I don't think so. The interview with Marengi tells us they would
consider an offer from a viable buyer. In my opinion, the rumor
about NSCP was just a rumor.

From the interview:

Q. What do you have to say about the acquisition/merger
rumors that are circulating as a result of the internal
and overall perception problem Novell has?

A. The fundamental answer to that is simple. We are
positioning the company as a total standalone. We are still
building infrastructure outside of the United States. We are
still recruiting employees inside the company. We have got
huge development projects going on inside of the company.
We are looking for a new CEO. Those are not things that you
do if you are trying to window dress the company to make
everything look wonderful for a sale. That is absolutely not
what we are doing.

However, taken on the other hand, if I am a board of
directors for Novell and somebody approaches the company
the board has a fiduciary responsible to increase shareholder
value and do what is right for the shareholder. So at that point
in time, we have no idea what will happen. But right now, we
are absolutely positioned for standalone success and we think
we have a great future.

Q. What is your prediction of where Novell will be in a
year's time?

A. We will have maintained our market share in the the
server operating system business. We will have created
enough mindshare that people will recognize us as an intranet
player - primarily in the corporate intranet space. GroupWise
will have evolved into the number two position in the
marketplace - probably second to Lotus Notes. And we will
have shipped some technology that people will say "God, I
didn't realize that Novell was that good." The directory will be
on its way to becoming the meta-directory in the industry due
to some of the strategy that we are moving on in that arena.
And people we be asking themselves why they didn't buy our
stock when it was at ten and a half.
