I read it differently. The Washington Post decided to publish what's a letter to the editor type of Opinion piece,

but not as a letter.

Maybe because it was not in response to a recent article or speech, they decided to give it a more prominent placement. It's not obvious that the paper took a position on it, other than the editorial board thought it was thought provoking. With 3,338 comments, they were right.
