Agree with your main point but have to stick up for Lincoln. With people he was, from the beginning, a kind, affable, and enjoyable person to be around. He could keep an entire room in laughter for a full evening with story after story and his company was sought out for this very reason.

As president, he had his dark moments borne of grief in personal loss and the tremendous strain of sending hundreds of thousands of men to their death to save the union. But generally speaking (and in normal conditions) he might have been the most pleasant and easily engaged man who ever occupied the White House.
