Getting rid of Assad would no doubt put an Islamist Government in power.

First answer: So What? That would still be better than Assad.

Second answer: Barry Rubin says there is a moderate opposition in Syria, so maybe not -- although a Lebanese-style civil war looks likely. But still better than Assad, as far as the neighbors are concerned.
