Moai culture under development: < there are dozens of potential new gold mines undergoing exploration/development here> When hordes of people are busy digging or otherwise obtaining gold, those people are distracted from doing things which are actually useful. The outcome will be reduced prospects for survival.

That's not to say that buying gold cheap and selling it dear is a bad thing to do. But the price of gold does show the "voltage" driving people out of failing financial fraud towards anything they think will save them and perhaps even give them a speculative gain. Most people seem to be looking for capital gains in gold rather than simply protection of their previously created wealth.
