Oral Phentolamine in nonspecific Erectile Insufficiency.

G. Gwinup,M.D.

Annals of Internal Medicine. july 15 1988

Summary: Total of 16 patients.

Patients could not achieve an erection for 3 months or longer.

Two groups of eight patients. One group took placebo, and one group took Phentolamine. After the initial test then the groups change to take the opposite drug.

Patients were instructed to take the first tablet 1.5 hours before attempted sexual intercourse.

After 3 to 5 days patients were instructed to take the second tablet 1.5 hours before attempted sexual intercourse.

Patients were told that both of the tablets might be beneficial.

Neither patients, neither the physician coul determine whether phentolamine or placebo was to be taken first.

Succesful treatment was defined as an erection that would allow penetration of a female partner and could be maintained until intravaginal ejaculation occurred.

RESULTS:

First group

Phentolamine First: 5 success 3 failed

Change to Placebo: of the phentolamine success only 1 responded
of the phentolmine failure 0 success, 3 failed

2nd group

Placebo first: 2 success 6 failed

Change to Phentolamine: 2 success also success, 0 failed
of the 6 failed then 4 success, and 2 failed

P. value of 0.004 given to the difference between phentolamine responders 11 of 16 vs placebo 3 of 16.

Note of the author: Phentolamine only responders 8 of 16.

This last number because one has to take out the placebo responders to isolate the phentolamine only effect.
