I agree this was a random killing. I'm hesitant, however, to say this was a solo effort given the complexity of using a flimsy small carbon steel knife to both abduct and kill someone without apparently much of a struggle (i.e. no defensive wounds). Rather, I think overwhelming force was used. I do also agree that, given the short window between when Jovin was likely abducted and when she was found near death, rage was surely a factor (perhaps drug-induced).

I truly think there are a bunch of folks who know what happened and who are just keeping quiet. For example, in the Etan Patz case, the NY Times reported his killer confessed to both his church prayer group and his sister and neither alerted the authorities. See: nytimes.com

Therefore, given the botched collection of evidence in this case, the only way the murder will be solved is if someone does come forward to say what they know. So the bottom line is really "How are we going to reach out to folks who know what really happened?" Solve that problem and we solve this murder!
