Review - Gurkha Legend Vintage 2001

Cigar Size: 6.5" x 58 You Gurkha fans might be familiar with this cigar. This was my first time to try one, and it did live up to its billing.

The hefty stick is wrapped in a dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, grown and harvested in 2001. The fillers are Dominican grown, Cuban-seed tobaco. The ingredients in this one complement each other, and join to form a very smooth but full bodied cigar. The Double Corona size make this one a handful. Even in this size, though, I did not have any draw issues, and construction was like Fort Knox.

The prelight aroma carried several different scents, with rich, dark tobacco being dominant. Once toasted and lit, the cigar came to life on about the third puff, and never let off, down to the finger-burning nub. I detected the flavors of dark chocolate, espresso, and some leather, in addition to the dark tobacco flavors. There is just the hint of a sweetish peppery flavor throughout the cigar.

I can honestly say this stick does stand toe-to-toe with a Cohiba Black Supremo, and probably wins in smoothness and just a huge mount of rich smoke. It is buttery smooth, and as complex and full of flavor as anyone should possibly want. I know I definitely was getting some very warm fingers before I laid mine down for the last time. It is that good.

Anyone who appreciates a hefty stick, full of complex flavors and medium-to-heavy in body . should give this Gurkha a try. Smoking this one has convinced me this cigar can stand up to the ultra-premium, overpriced luxury cigars available today. In fact, I really think I prefer the Gurkha, over the Cohiba. The Gurkha is just smoother overall, with a fantastic draw.
