Everything you say and suggest makes sense.

I tend to shy away from Physical Therapists as I think their approach is too radical. But I know lots of people who have benefited from them. I am a massage therapist so my preference is pretty clear. I think deep tissue massage is the best for muscle injury, after it has time to heal.

In addition to what you have noted, there are 'Tends' units now available for under 100 bucks. I have used them and they are great for chronic problems.

As I noted in a post to Elmer, I think Davies' book "Trigger Point Therapy Workbook" can help a lot of people.

I agree with your assertion that injuries may have a different cause. A weak foot can cause a tendon injury. And you ultimately have to deal with the foot problem.

The important point is to find a therapy that works for you, to pursue it, and not to let the injury restrict your life beyond the period it takes for it to heal.
