Mark Steyn is a genius. He sees the emperor without his clothes, while fewer and fewer citizens of the West are capable of doing so. What he says is always painful, but so are the cures for many cancers. The question is, do we want to confront the pain head-on, or do we want to continue sliding into oblivion because incremental pain seems so much less uncomfortable.
True, Steyn is amazing. He is also a good writer, and for such a pessimistic guy has a great sense of humor. And yes, he is hard to read. I can handle his articles, but reading his book was a challenge. Can make you depressed.
Not to fall too far behind Steyn in pessimism, I'm quite sceptical that the slide can be stopped. Our political and intellectual leadership is too power greedy, stupid and corrupt, and the public in general - too brainwashed. We are heading towards some serious socio-economic turbulence. Hard to tell for how long they can keep kicking the can down the road, but sooner or later accounts will be settled. Let's just hope that we - and the nation - will be able to come out of it, and do better in the future. |
