"I seem to recall that the Civil War officially began when the South attacked Ft. Sumter, after it's commander refused to surrender."

once again for the 10,000th time.

the north invaded Fort Sumter. read a real history book not a northern one.

after the separation the north and south were in negotiation for what the south would pay for the forts, since they were built with federal funds (money from the northern and southern states, for those from rio linda).

it was ruled that all forts would stay as they are until the details could be worked out.

At the time fort sumtner was EMPTY because it was under renovations. One night the Union commander from Fort moultrie decided (you know lincoln told him to) to take a bunch of his men over to ft Sumter (under the cover of night) and occupy it. That's an attack on fort sumter, an invasion of fort sumter, an ACT OF WAR.

in the morning the south rightfully said get out, the arrogant north said no and the war was started (by the north).

now you deal with the truth
