Spain Will Make Decision On Bailout After Fin Min Talks - EFE
09-Jun-2012

MADRID--Spain's government will make a decision on whether it immediately requests a European Union bailout for its troubled banking sector after a conference call between euro zone finance ministers scheduled for 1400 GMT, the country's state-owned news agency EFE reports, citing government sources.

Spain's government didn't request the conference call, and is currently studying the contents of an IMF report released Friday, with estimates of capital needs for the country's banks.

The IMF said Friday Spanish banks need about EUR40 billion in additional capital to guard against further deterioration in the nation's economy, a key figure expected to guide European policymakers weighing a rescue for the banking system.

The fund said "important vulnerabilities" remain in Spain's financial system and that the nation's banks need government support to prevent further turmoil. The financial sector is struggling under the weight of deep losses from a housing downturn that has crippled banks and the broader Spanish economy.

"The extent and persistence of the economic deterioration may imply further bank losses," said Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, deputy director of the IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department. "Full implementation of reforms, as well as establishing a credible public backstop, are critical for preserving financial stability going forward."
