<<It seems like you are somewhat looking forward to investing full time>>

yes. i have been planning this for a couple of years now. just had to hit a few milestones at work for vested post retirement health and 25 years of service, and both of those are complete.

<<Contrast that with the natural desire to continue working >>

natural desire for my wife, but one i find vaguely unnatural. certainly a steady paycheck helps sleeping at night, i will grant you that much!

i used to really enjoy my job, but the past couple of years have been difficult. we really do not fit in well with the corporate strategy (hence the sale, which makes a lot of sense given the metrics my company uses...i think the metrics are wrong, but if they believe them they should have sold us a couple of years ago). i do enjoy investing on those rare occasions when i am not losing my arse, and i enjoy the intellectual challenge of learning about news industries even when i am paying tuition.

in terms of budgeting i have been running a bunch of spreadsheets with different assumptions and different strategies. of course that is an ongoing process, but it seems unlikely i will need to seek employment as a greeter at walmart. i am largely to the point of having a sufficient allocation to stocks that are boring but have a decent track record of dividend increases to cover baseline, while leaving enough to play with to still have some fun to cover longer term needs. plus my wife is still working. :-)

at least that is the theory.
