Smartphones also make the ultimate multitool. I find myself increasing grabbing my phone when I am in the middle of a project — it becomes my flashlight in the dark, my level when hanging a picture, a calculator, and a notepad. But as great as out phones are, they are still limited by the sensors inside of them. For example, I can’t use my phone as a laser thermometer, or a moisture sensor, or a breathalyzer no matter what apps I buy. That said, if I could use my phone to do any of those things, I probably would use my phone exclusively for those tasks. Apparently I’m not alone in this, since the team at Sensorcron have started up a a Kickstarter project they have called Sensordrone.

Sensordrone looks a little bit like a naked USB Flash drive, but instead of storing data this little key is packed with sensors. Their claim on Kickstarter is that Sensordrone includes more sensors than anything else available. That’s not all that hard to believe when you read that is carries gas, temperature, humidity, proximity, color intensity, and pressure sensors inside. It’s pretty much a one-stop-shop for whatever you would want to use to grab data. In fact, if you need another kind of sensor, the device is expandable via their adapter which makes the Sensordrone a Bluetooth transmitter.

All of the information gathered on the Sensordrone can either be sent in bursts, transmitted live, or just stored on the device until you need it later.

The demonstration video offers a great many possibilities, but they are all shown off in individual app form. There’s air quality apps, infrared thermometer apps, light intensity apps, but all of these are one-off single task apps. The only time you see the gadget spit out raw data is when they demonstrate the possibility for the app to act as a stud sensor. This one little gadget could double the amount of apps you have on your phone, just in the different sensor related apps. You probably don’t need a Gas Leak app, a Carbon Monoxide app, and a Fart Sensor… especially if an app can be written to combine that information. Sensorcron says that they will make the Sensormatic open, and that they only limit is your imagination, but doesn’t really go very deep into what that means for the device.

The Kickstarter page lists the Sensordrone retail price at $199, but if you participate in the Kickstarter you only need to pay $175 to get your hands on one when they come out. The Sensordrone really looks like an incredible gadget, and clearly something that takes us one step closer to having a Tricorder for your mobile device.
