I recall that passage clearly. I believe it was quoted by Niall Ferguson in his "Pity of War", although I could be mistaken.

And as far as the carnage goes, Frenchman-turned-Brit, Hillaire Belloc, described colonial warfare in the 19th century:

"Whatever happens, we have got
The Maxim gun, and they have not."

Unfortunately, both alliances forgot the opposition had plenty of Maxim guns. The carnage was predictable.
