I enjoy hard work. So that is a difference between us. Hard work does not derange you. Instead it can give you a feeling of satisfaction. I play hard, and I work hard. And I enjoy it all.

You can say hard work is not necessary for success, but the students I know who succeed in school and in the labor market, work hard. They go above and beyond. They aren't mayflies. Not that there's anything wrong with mayflies, but their survivability is not great. I'm glad my daughter, when she went to school, busted her ass- and got excellent grades, and didn't waste our money. Now my son is doing the same. It's good training for the very competitive work environment out there.

You talk a lot about how well your kids did in school. My guess is they worked hard.

I don't know what age child you are talking about. If it's an elementary age kid- I agree. Fun is ok. If it's a high school kid, you are doing them a disservice if they want to go to a great school. Every little extra helps your brag sheet- and that Japanese immersion school would be excellent. With kids graduating with 4.4's now- because they take highly weighted AP classes, the competition for top schools is fierce. It doesn't help kids to pretend that is not so. Even from when your daughters went to school, it's a different world out there.
