For whatever reason the south is very anti intellectual. Whenever I am in the south or around a lot of southerners I button up. No words of substance will come out of my mouth as they react poorly to words with ideas in them.

I spent 4 years working on the Alaska pipeline on the north slope out of the laborers union. Most of the workers were from the south. Southern pipeliners. I did not have one single substantive discussion in all the 4 years I was there with anyone. They talk about sports, women, cars and hunting and fishing.

When I was in Beloxi Mississippi a few years ago playing poker, the anti intellectual and hatred by the southerner's of ideas and the left coast culture was clear to see. It was palpable. A lawyer playing next to me would not even admit he practised law until we were in private?

That culture of ignorance keeps them crippled.

If conservatives work so hard why is the deep south so poverty stricken? A big difference in the big cities down this way but those are more purple with lots of the refined educated southerners I talked about and yankees that helped grow the local economies much faster in recent decades.. Still most of the true innovation takes place on your left coast and big cities of the north..
