A market of stocks... or a market of shocks? While getting my car repaired I looked through a NYSE table for high PE stocks and found that the following 5 stocks shocked me with respect to their valuation: HNZ CLX KO MAT G. Combined, they have an average PE of 44.4 and an expected growth rate for next yr of only 12.8%. That's a ratio of 3.5X expected growth! I don't know how that can be, especially when I compare MRCV to this group. Last September, I added significantly to my MRVC position at $23.50 and have held on since. I remember thinking what a good move I made when the stock hit $29 about a week after my purchase (on 9/13/96) Now, a little more than 14 months later the price is nearly $3.00 LOWER than on that date 14 mo's ago! This in spite of the company earning $.78 a share over the past 12 months (Double what the previous 12 month period was). There has not been one piece of bad news (that I know of) in the past 14 months, the company has since had an equity investment by INTEL, a successful secondary offering at $35.75 and a major brokerage firm recommend it! They've introduced new products, increased their margins, and greatly improved their balance sheet... I would disagree that this is a maket of stocks. In fact, I don't know what to call this market.... Except an UNFAIR market! I'm in MRV for the long term and those of you who've been along for the ride for a few years have been GREATLY rewarded. It's just those of us who got in last summer and fall that have a sick feeling that our patience has gone unrewarded, so far.
