If you are obsessed with the hammer in your hand, everything looks like a nail. If you are obsessed with ideological approaches to issues, it's incomprehensible that anyone out there doesn't line up neatly in one of the camps to join the crusade against the Evil Others on the other side of the divide. As our political debate sucks in more and more people to this dead-end mindset, the quality of the debate just keeps crumbling. Obsessive ideologues don't accomplish things in the world except pounding their drum. Policymakers and politicians don't have a choice if they want to stay in power.
