Steve, I found out what happened to Conner. It has been swallowed up by Seagate. In one of the ads, a mail order company headed one column: SEAGATE (formerly Conner).
Seagate, which now owns Conner, has a good name too. Maybe WD has a higher failure rate because they spin so much faster, according to most of the specs.
So, price and warranty are what to look for, with emphasis on warranty. The IDE drives are all 3 years except for the Maxtors which are only 2 years. Micropolis drives have a 5 year warranty, but they are Scuzzies.
Thanks for your opinions.
(On Packard Bell - have had experience with a PB computer that was loaned to us for a few months. It was the junkiest PC I'd ever worked with. It had compatibility problems with software that other computers run OK. It had surface defects in its hard drive that emerged after we used it a while. Spinrite was used to salvage the hard drive. It was a 486, but it was clunky. This CompuAdd 486 could run circles around it.)
Packard Bell computers seem to reflect a large measure of unrighteousness in their design and workmanship, in my inexpert opinion.
