I sense doubt in you about the 60's being about existentialism and not the Viet Nam war. It was the existential awareness that allowed all the great ideas of the 60's to manifest. The reality to allow us to question what our government was doing in Viet Nam, laws and culture supporting segregation, womens lib, gay rights, the environment, self actualization. Existentialism, above all else, allowed people the freedom to think freely and logically about all things, but especially the freedom to question one's myths and scripts. In all of history, when has that ever been the case before? And it logically follows the people best situated to engage in that endeavor would lead the way. Like the liberals around the world.
