Avid Continues to Build Momentum in the Special Effects Market
Announces Recent Media Illusion Software Purchases by Up-and-Coming Effects Houses
TEWKSBURY, Mass.--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1997-- Avid Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVID - news) today announced a number of effects houses that have recently begun using Avid's Media Illusion compositing and special effects software, one of the most advanced digital nonlinear composting packages available. Spanning a range of film and video post-production facilities, these new customers include:
-- Digital Filmworks (Los Angeles, CA) -- Hollywood Effects (Santa Monica, CA) -- SimEx (Los Angeles, CA) -- So! Much Animation (New York, NY) -- Nick Ericson Studios (New York, NY) -- Tiburon Entertainment (Orlando, FL) -- Netter Digital Entertainment (Nasdaq:NETT - news; Los Angeles, CA) -- S. Graphics (Honolulu, HI) -- Metropolis Digital (San Jose, CA) -- Digital Universe (New York, NY)
''The world is just starting to understand that Avid is in the special effects business,'' said Jim Melvin, Avid's director of product marketing for graphics and effects. ''When people think of Avid, they think editing, but Avid's Media Illusion, Matador, and Elastic Reality products are industry leading tools. And customers are making a choice to purchase these systems because they allow them greater flexibility and ease of use as well as integration between tools to enable fast feedback and previsualization of effects.''
Up-and-Coming Effects Houses Speak Out
According to users, whether the final product is a feature film or a commercial, Avid's Media Illusion software offers an advanced compositing toolset in a fast and flexible nonlinear environment.
''Avid's Media Illusion is a great tool because its interface is much easier to learn and use. It also allows us to do complex tasks equal to other offerings in the market, but at a fraction of the cost,'' said George Mendoza, Executive Producer of SimEx, a digital effects house that has done feature film work for ''Rocketman'', ''Mortal Kombat Annihilation'' and ''Event Horizon.''
''Media Illusion also blows the competition away in terms of compositing,'' continued Mendoza. ''In a recent spot we did for Panasonic, we worked in concert with another company that was using a high-end compositing system. The other system managed to get only one shot completed in four days. Using Media Illusion, we were able to get the remaining 15 shots done in two weeks.''
''Avid's Media Illusion has allowed us to keep up with the rest of the industry and stay competitive with larger commercial facilities and effects houses,'' said Lauri Salladay, co-creative director of So! Much Animation, a digital effects studio in New York specializing in commercial and broadcast design. ''Media Illusion gives us the flexibility and speed to be creative in time-sensitive situations. This allows us to be customer-focused, so we can easily make adjustments even at the last minute. And since I also like using images at full resolution when building effects, Media Illusion offers me more speed than, say, other effects packages, so I can be freer in the development phase.''
