CR Lum,

You don't seems to get my points. Having a 50x DSP will not be the selling point (at least not NOW). Unless there is some technology break-thru. Otherwise the law of physic really limit the rotation speed of a CD-ROM. CAV/CLV mix mode operation is developed by Pioneer on the 8x device to overcome virbition and now the same technique is found not as effective on a 24x CD-ROM. And manufacturer have slow to move on to 32x. By the time 50x mass production is feasible, CD-ROM is already lend its way to DVD. Don't forget, a 50x CD-ROM will not provide significant performance over 12x CD-ROM given the same 80-110ms high end CD-ROM's access time. Some desgin info for you. To increase performance for a non-drum HDD-like DASD you can.
1) increase rpm
2) reduce access time
3) increase the density of the platter/disc (spt in HDD)

For CD-ROM, #1 has been effectively optimized, not much can be done other than marketing hype. #2 may still have some room for improvement similar to #1. #3 is fixed because of the CD-ROM standard. The solution is DVD-ROM.

Good Luck
