Shortage of companies and drivers has schedules packed

If you’re planning to move this summer, be prepared to hit the brakes.

A decline in the number of moving companies and drivers, coupled with a slightly improving economy, has backed up central Ohio movers.

Customers who might have scheduled a move in a week or two last year find themselves waiting a month or longer now. Besides the wait, they’ll pay an estimated 10 percent more this year for the service.

“If Joe Customer calls today and they need to move relatively soon — say, within a month — they are going to be challenged to find anyone to move them,” said Jack Supinger, who manages the Columbus office of Planes Moving & Storage, a United Van Lines agent.

The problem is particularly acute for long-distance moves, which require commercial-truck drivers, whose numbers fell during the past few years as the industry was stuck in reverse.
