Small businesses are not starting up because there is a lack of demand. There is a lack of demand because of cyclical deleveraging. Think housing! People stopped using their extra income from escalating home values; refinancing, sales or home equity loans. That not only all went away, it became a drag as many many people went under water on their loans. That is the nature of big balloons that go pop. It happened in 1929 when the vehicle of the balloon like growth was stocks. Just like that cycle, this one will take a lot of time before it has passed.
