We're at the program's all-time low of 2.9 workers to each beneficiary. Coupled with ever-lowering fertility rates and ever-increasing longevity rates, we're late starting austerity measures. Of course, we won't, at least not until the younger ones are in power and get their shot at regulating the program.

The .765 contribution rate on gross pay has not been raised since 1990. The only factor being raised is the wage limit that a worker pays in (now at $106,800 to the Social Security portion only) - Medicare has no cap on what the worker contributes to it, but it's at a low .0145 rate. Now, incredibly, the .062 rate for the employee's SS share is now .042!, bringing in even less revenue in this dodgy environment. Our current stupidity will inevitably lead to the desperation.
