Apple for the MacBook Pro with Retina Display limits the SSD choices for the 15" model with 2.3 GHz to a 256 GB, but for the 2.6 or 2.7 GHz models, you have a low limit of 512 with which you can add 256 for $500, for a maximum of 768 GB.

So Apple, at least for .store.apple access by Safari from an iPad, doesn't let me choose the 256 GB with the 2.6 or 2.7 GHz MacBook Pro with Retina Display, even though the chassis has positions for 1 512 and 1 256 GB.

Compare what Apple does with what Orbitz is testing.

Why wouldn't I be able to get the 256 GB drive if that's what I want?

But surprisingly, the words above the 2 buttons for the faster (2.6 GHz and 2.7) models are:

Storage

Your MacBook Pro comes standard with 256GB or 512GB of flash storage.

Maybe by telephone I could bypass that restriction.
