More field research: My wife said that over the past few weeks in her inner-city Denver Catholic elemantary school, more and more kids have gotten virtual pets. She has noticed 20 so far (evenly split between Tamagotchis and NanoPets, but no knock-offs). The beeping is driving her crazy because she knows what it means (the beeping pet needs attention and she will have to fight for the student caregiver's attention). But she puts up with it because she knows it is helping our Bandai stock :-). She was surprised the craze hadn't taken off before this, but it looks like it was just delayed. Dennis, if you are still monitoring this thread, could you please let us know how big (or small) the virtual pet craze is in your high school? Thanks! On another note, my wife just got back from a three-week trip to Japan and she said the Tamagotchi craze is alive and well there. She brought back a Tamagotchi egg with a digital clock in it (sort of a keyring), some more keyrings with 1/2" long plastic versions of the different Tamagotchi critters, Tamagotchi candy dispensers, and Tamagotchi fabric. Also a Tamagotchi fan book for kids written entirely in Kanji so I have no idea what it's saying :-) The Tamagotchis she saw there weren't much different from the ones we can get in the States, and they were $35 each.
