BANGKOK (November 26, 1997 09:47 a.m. EST
nando.net) - Thailand's ethics chiefs have approved
human trials of a possible AIDS vaccine that targets strains of
the HIV virus common in the country, a report said Wednesday.

The vaccine, developed from two strains of the human
immunodeficiency virus that can cause AIDS, has been
approved by the national ethics board but is still subject to the
approval of a government scientific committee.

If approved, the AIDS Vax vaccine, manufactured by the
U.S.-based Vax Gen Inc, would then be tried on 90 intravenous
drug users who are not HIV-positive, the Bangkok Post quoted
project chief Sricharoen Migasena as saying.

The scientist said an earlier test had been conducted on a
vaccine using material from only one strain, but the new
two-strain variety promised to be more effective.
