The obamacare ruling is much more important. It changes the whole philosophy on which this country is run. If obamacare is implemented it will be nearly impossible to unravell.
I had this occupational preoccupation with healthcare for most of my life. Remember coming to a conclusion a long time ago, in the 70's - early 80's, that socialized medicine would be a bad thing. Not because it wouldn't function - it would, just like the police, the military and the VA do - but because it would change the nature of our politico-economic system. It would give far too much power to politicians.
And - yes, once in place, foggedaboudit, it's there to stay. Before long, millions of people who presently may oppose the idea, would come to depend on it.
What we have now is the product of several decades of accumulating government regulations, mutilations, demands and expectations. It won't last, and a reform is badly needed - but it needs to be in the direction which is opposite to where ObamaCare wants to take us. Basically, I think, it would be best to have a combination of a functional, basic and CHEAP safety net -- and, on the other hand, a greatly deregulated private healthcare system. First dollar coverage is ridiculous. Insurance is needed, but it needs to be true insurance, against catastrophic costs.
The big question is whether it would prove possible to prevent politicians from gradually expanding the "safety net" into a full blown socialist system. I'm not sure about that. |
