If one's goal was to end private insurance then the best outcome would have been to kill the mandate and keep everything else. With the mandate, it will take a little longer.

Not really. The tax penalty is set so low the mandate doesn't really take effect for the first five years. That should be time enough to kill off the insurance companies.
