Although smartphones based on Android have typically sold more overall units than iOS-based smartphones, Apple’s iPhone has long been the top individual smartphone sub-brand, easily besting the assorted Droids, Galaxies and One-series devices that have stood in its path. But according to Strategy Analytics, Samsung’s Galaxy series has now overtaken the iPhone as the number-one individual smartphone sub-brand in the world. “Samsung and Apple are currently the clear leaders, and with their deep pockets enabling hard-to-match marketing spend, they represent a considerable challenge to the chasing pack,” the firm wrote in the abstract on its latest study. The company also found that the nine largest smartphone families such as the iPhone, the Galaxy series and the Motorola Droid series, accounted for more than two-thirds of all smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2012.
