Apart from the precise methodology of Science, the process of peer review with the intent--not of corroborating, but of falsifying any claims--gives Science a self correcting mechanism. Sometimes a group of scientists will put other values at the head of their self interest, but generally their self interest is served by their sincere desire to discover and refine our knowledge of reality. In two words--Science Works!

The only basis people have for believing supernatural claims is that they want to. If it was a verifiable or evidential claim it would be scientific rather than supernatural. True claims can withstand the scrutiny of peer review and give consistent results without fail. Once a truth claim has been falsified, it must be refined by new research. Supernatural claims have no foundation and can be changed (if they ever are) only by capricious whim--equally without foundation. Not a very human way to live.
