6/29/12 Contest Update As those reading this probably know, an economics/politics debate on the thread this week escalated to the point where CHRIS08 asked me to remove his entry from the Charity Contest. In retrospect, I wish I had cut short the debate early on as it was inappropriate for the Charity Contest thread. Thinking about my motivation for letting the debate go on, it may be because I share Chris’s admiration for Krugman whose views are not typically defended by SI biotechies. In any case, I and other contestants have asked Chris to reconsider his withdrawal. But, to my dismay, he hasn’t responded with a change of heart. So, what makes sense to me (and requires the least amount of work) is to simply replace CHRIS08 with ANON (for Anonymous) on my Contest spreadsheets rather than entirely remove his portfolio. I’ll give Chris another week to reconsider before making the switch. If the CHRIS08/ANON portfolio wins the Contest (ironically, at Friday’s close it’s in first place) and Chris doesn’t reconsider his decision to drop out, the second place portfolio will be declared Contest winner. I hope the above plan is OK with other Contestants. Now for the Contest update. An exuberant Friday rally following the positive SCOTUS Obamacare decision, at the very least shows that investors are far more focused on corporate than human healthcare. At Friday’s close the Contest median was up 27.43% YTD (vs. up 26.04% YTD a week ago). In comparison, the Nasdaq Biotech Index was up 24.61% YTD (vs. up 23.39% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 12.66% YTD (vs. up 11.03% YTD a week ago). CHRIS08/ANON’s portfolio, up 56.66% YTD, moved into the Contest lead as a big drop in SNTA took a toll on DONS’ portfolio. Consequently, DONS’ portfolio, up 56.20% YTD, fell to second place and BIOJIM’s portfolio, up 55.59% YTD, dropped to third place. At Friday's close, just 4 of the 38 Contest portfolios were in the red and 21 of the 38 portfolios were beating the NBI. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week. (Foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in the weekly and YTD Top 5 & Bottom 5 tables, when posted.) Portfolio adjustments: See above for my proposal on dealing with CHRIS 08's request to withdraw from the Contest. Have a safe and mellow weekend & Independence Day biotechies! (All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
