In any case, moral judgments about the past should be considered in the context of the time. Consider the case of Buck v. Bell, an 8-1 decision of the U.S. Supreme court in 1927 in which the court ruled that compulsory sterilization of the mentally retarded did not violate the due process clause of the 14th Amendment. The ruling was written by Oliver Wendell Holmes who concluded his argument by declaring that "Three generations of imbeciles are enough".
