Posterior superior parietal cortex ....Here's an interesting look at the religious experience tied into those parts of the brain whos primary functions they have identitified for the orientation of the the physical "self" in the world . Such a function of one complex with the brain almost intuitively has an appeal , even skeptical no-no people can grasp that one of the important features of our daily existence depends on an innate ability to be in constant relationship spatially in maintaining a sense of self stability . They have identitfied this part of the brain complex ....

They're doing some pretty fantastic studies now mapping & imaging the human brain and this young Dr Andrew Newberg covers this about 9mins into this talk definitely in worth a listen , just ran across yesterday

This young researcher is commenting on brain function & the biology of intense religious experience that can be indentified from a reductionist pov but it is here i think that we do start to get glimpses of specific areas within this neural net that has evolved these essential basic functions . Obviously everything must start from those parts of the brain that create a continuity of a sense of self , stability & balance within the world spatially . But this is effected by people drawn into deeper religious experiences some offering a greater sense of self paradoxically or at least some loss of connection allows for sense of loss of self into something seemingly greater .

Known as the Posterior superior parietal cortex ( or called simply refered to the Orientation area )
