In NY and many other states, any medical bills are paid by your own auto ins. policy (called NO Fault), but liability is the responsibility of the person who caused the accident. If you don't insure your own car, you won't get it paid for..... you will if it's not your fault under the other person's liability. (mandatory). Most people drop the insurance on their own car as the car ages and in 3 years or so drop it all together and take the hit if they damage or destroy their own car....
