I don't know that I agree with you. Have you been to a Walmart lately?

I have, but I also travel internationally a lot.

We have a lot of fat people - many of which shop at WalMart, but national comparisons are tough.

If you look at Scandinavia - we look bad, but if you compare Minnesota to Sweden we actually look very good. Similarly compare Japanese Americans to Japanese. You will be surprised.

Our ethnic and demographic makeup is different from Europe and that matters from an epidemiological basis.

Basic fact - compare national cancer survival rates for specific diseases. This is a non political statistic and the results are devastating.

An Op-Ed I saw yesterday was from a cancer survivor who had a lot of insurance issues and she was elated over the win. I doubt she realizes that in almost every 'Nationalized' plan I know - she would have had an easy time financially, but would be dead.

And the national statistics take into account our 23 million illegals and full diverse population. Cancer survival rates for middle class Americans are well ahead of any other country - particularly if you adjust for ethnic origin (Europeans to European Americans, Africans to African-Americans etc).

One thought on where we are headed:

Unadjusted raw 5 year survival rates for two common cancers
  • Prostate Cancer - US 91.9%, UK 51.1%
  • Breast Cancer - US 83.9%, UK 69.7%
Canada and Australia do better than the UK, but no country is close when you adjust for the demographic differences. Remember that 83.9% includes the illegal Mexican maid who shows up in the ER with end-stage breast cancer.
