US home ownership is a case apart. Land. Lots of land to build. Transport based on the automobile and low cost fuel allowed for inexpensive movement. USD world currency allowed for financing home ownership. Home construction was what drove the economy. Brazil wants the US model. "Quem casa, quer casa" "Who marries wants a home" The Brazilian is willing to give up many consumer goods to own his house. Europeans give up the home and consume a lot and go on vacations abroad. Post WW II industrial countries needed consumer for goods. Thus the model curtailed home ownership and promoted consumption of goods.
