The WSJ is not infallible.

Reread the first 4 paragraphs that I posted, aware that most of the component suppliers to Apple's contract manufacturer are the same as the component suppliers to Amazon's. The manufacturer might even be Foxconn for both.

The WSJ sprinkles iPad and Apple through the column, as if name dropping, and nothing more.

If it were Amazon making 5 million or even 10 million Kindle Fire 2 in September - November, the article would read almost the same and the headline would be wrong.

The facts we know include an Amazon product announcement on about July 31, and no confirmation that Apple asked developers at WWDC to scale Apps or create new ones for a smaller, different tablet format.

But if Apple does that, it will not be as simple as the 2 choices of Apps now shown as 1X and 2X size, the fragmentation Jobs belittled. And then it will be much easier to make 7.9" size original iPad Apps available on competitor 7.9" devices including Fire and Android tablets, and the cheaper ones.

I'd place the odds you are right at 50:50.
