The problem is one of confidence in the definition of "random". There are many hidden variables/co-factors that the polltaker must take into account. Thus, we have to trust the polltaker. For example, perhaps managers have different opinions than employees. There are more employees than managers, so perhaps my poll should consist of more employees? On the other hand, managers make the product purchase decisions, so perhaps my poll should only consist of managers. There can be any number of criteria such as this. Which is why you want professionals to do this sort of study, and which is why trust is very important.

A lot of people don't trust polls which are commissioned by Microsoft. For example, their poll that most Java programmers use Visual J++ was something which was blantantly incorrect (Any programmer who purchased Visual Studio for Fortan, or C++, or Visual Basic got counted as using Visual J++). So their reputation is not of the highest in this department.
