Its a good question. Certainly a couple of the main reasons are:

- Planes currently use oil products
- Some people won't or don't like to fly
- Trains could service multiple stops, unlike planes that are point to point.

However, on the last point, I will note that the more stops involved, the slower the average time becomes. It is a trade-off that is not insignificant.

Despite rhetoric, the skies have plenty of available capacity. Southwest only flies 737s which have moderate capacity.
