It is a matter of deciding what is important. I think it is highly likely were I in that circumstance today, we would have a lesser policy but I cannot imagine we would be without insurance with two young kids.

The family that lives down the street, who came here from Mexico in the 80s, has never carried health insurance, flat out doesn't believe in it. He could afford it, easily. Raised four kids. His wife is being treated for cancer right now, and he reaches in his pocket and pays the tab. To him, that's being responsible. To me, it is insane. But both methods work.

The only way I am able to afford health insurance these days is by taking a policy that is only good for a catastrophic event. Otherwise, I pay out pocket for any medicines or doctor visits I need. In other words, I don't go to the doctor......fortunately, I have a cousin who is an MD. And don't even get me started on seeing an MD.........starting charges here just for a consultation is $200......that's for ten minutes of the doctor's time. And we're talking a clinic.

Medicine and health insurance have become luxuries that only the wealthy can afford. Its why very few companies provide health insurance as part of their employee compensation. Now you can believe that Americans are squandering their money on 'toys' or trips to McDonalds........and that they do not have your priorities.........but that's not my experience. The health system in this country is broken. Obamacare is an attempt to correct some of the problems. However, its only a partial solution because Rs and conservative Dems have fought it every step of the way.
