Some new interesting reads on human development in the Amazon Basin . guardian.co.uk This is in the Bolivian part of the Basin not that far from Machu Picchu 500 miles or so . There is some proof that humans have been in South America for much longer than the last ice age . Most thought that the earliest visitors were about 15 thous years ago . Even the earliest Europeans to the Amazon , 1540s , told stories of large cities . This is the proof . It is thought that European diseases wiped them out and what was left was claimed by the jungle .
